About Decarb Heat event
is a yearly conference hosted in Brussels which brings together many stakeholders with a shared vision of carbon-free future. It enables EU policy makers as Claude Turmes, responsible industries like IKEA
, research institutes as Fraunhofer
and energy efficient technology engineering like Danfoss
to meet, present, debate and share their important message. Without a doubt, sector commitment proved to be very much present and strong but how will they actually make it happen?
Electrification, district heating, and industrial processes were repeated as priorities for action, while collaboration, new business models, energy efficiency, heat pumps and greater share of renewables were deemed as the remedy.
Role of DryFiciency
In the heart of this initiative, many appeals of the speakers
were addressed at the need of new technology and associated new business models. As a part of official event program, DryFiciency project organized a Project Café to introduce its upcoming new technology
and its contribution to carbon-free future of the EU. Michael Hartl from Austrian Institute of Technology
presented the development and key goals of DryFiciency´s two new heat pump systems
which are to be, if successful, installed in energy-intensive industries in the EU. And there is no lack of ambition, this 10-partner consortium has for its goal to save up to 80% of energy in industrial drying processes.
But coming from experience that new technology mostly stays in the lab and hence doesn´t reach the market, the DryFiciency consortium plans to validate the technology
and attract potential buyers by demonstrating it at 3 operating processing sites of Wienerberger, Agrana and Mars
International by the end of the project. The approach, commonly seen in Research & Innovation projects of Horizon 2020
, is joining scientific know-how from each partner to produce innovative technology with European-wide impact
on the environment, economic growth and job creation by collaboration. Compressor specialists Rotrex and Bitzer, lubricants and working fluids specialists Fuchs and Chemours and system engineering specialist SINTEF, EPCON and AIT aim to achieve the following expected primary energy savings per demonstrator:
MARS International: 3418 Mwh/a,
AGRANA Stäarke: 3188 Mwh/a,
Wienerberger: 5960 Mwh/a,
and measures its success by key performance goals
80% increase in energy efficiency,
20%/kg reduction of production costs and
57% - 73% reduction of C02 emissions.
The project is relevant
for the Decarb Heat Initiative
because it aims to contribute to efficient European heating & cooling sector by 2050 by using heat pumps. It is even more relevant when energy-intensive industries are involved. It was calculated that 11.3 exajouls of waste heat are being lost every year in the EU alone, emitting large CO2 emissions accordingly - 374 million of tons in the industrial processing to be exact. DryFiciency aims to recycle heat for drying - see the video below to understand how it works:
