Event report: 13th IIR Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants

18-20 June 2018, Valencia, Spain

DryFiciency project was recently featured at the 13th Gustav Lorentzen Conference in Valencia, Spain by an oral presentation of Michael Bantle from research institute SINTEF Norway. The presentation was mainly based on a peer-reviewed conference article "Performance evaluation of two stage mechanical vapour recompression with turbo-compressors" submitted by Michael Bantle, Christian Schlemminger, Ignat Tolstorebrov, Marcel Ahrens and Kjetil Evenmo earlier this year and was on the few presenting research work at a higher technological readiness level. There, the results of the first two-stage turbo-compressor tests developed within DryFiciency project were disseminated to approximately 50 members of the scientific community by the means of an oral presentation in the session of R718 applications. The presentation named "Performance evaluation of two stage mechanical vapour recompression with turbo-compressors" and whose contributors are Michael Bantle, Christian Schlemminger, Ignat Tolstorebrov, Marcel Ahrens and Kjetil Evenmo was one of the few presentations showing innovative technologies on a high technological readiness (TRL) level, namely beyond the lab activities. Since the conference and its interested community are focusing on the applications of natural refrigerants in order to phase out Hydrofluoroolefins (HFO) compounds as refrigerants due to its negative impact on the environment as well as global warming potential, its potential use could be of increased relevance. It is worth mentioning that to control emissions from fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases), the EU is implementing new F-gases Regulations to cut down EU’s F-gas emissions by two-thirds by 2030 compared with 2014 levels and that the need for alternative refrigeration system will, therefore, become more evident. The conference peer-reviewed publication will be available on the Fridoc database of the International Institute of Refrigeration, enabling use of publicly funded research by the scientific community for further research. Additionally, it will give 0.75 publications points according to the Norwegian publication system. Information on the open access of this publication through OpenAire platform of Horizon 2020 programme will be updated soon. Results of the research work done within DryFiciency project which aims to demonstrate and multiplicate innovative high temperature industrial heat pump systems aiming to significantly reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption, were disseminated to all together approximately 300 participants of the conference, resulting in several other research institutions showing an interest in the future work of the project.
