Event report: #DecarbIndustry Webinar

29 Nov 2018, online

The webinar aimed at promoting the best examples that the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) has collected during the years among the Heat Pump city of the Year award’s applications and the European projects in which is involved. The goal is to share knowledge of the best innovative application of heat humps in the industrial sector and promoting their replicability across Europe, stepping towards the decarbonisation path.

During the webinar, four different examples of the application of heat pumps in the industrial processes were presented:

The first project presented by  Zent-Frenger uses ground source energy to heat and cool the first climate-neutral train maintenance depot in Cologne. One of the most interesting aspects of this system is its duality for the H&C, thus the system uses the heat waste from the cooling production to heat the building, directed by a technological device. This application allows an annual saving potential of 1245t CO2 savings.

The second project was presented by Calefa Oy and discussed their project in a data centre in the city of Mäntsälä, Finland. The data centre is using a heat recovery unit and heat pumps to reuse the waste heat from the computers room and transfer it directly into a district heating network. This solution is supplying 80% of the annual heating demand of the city.

Oilon Oy company presented their large heat pump systems used in a synchrotron radiation laboratory in Sweden. In the lab, there are heat pumps delivering 3.90 MW cooling in two different temperatures (23 and 20 C), and the heat generated from the cooling is directed to the local district heating system at a temperature of 80 C.

The sponsor and honored last speaker of the event was our project. We presented DryFiciency as an EU H2020 funded project which aims to upgrade the available excess/waste heat streams and to make them available for productive use at temperatures up to 160°C. The deployment of heat pump technology will increase energy efficiency thus reducing fossil energy demand and related emissions. The DryF project is developing and testing specific heat pump solutions for drying bricks (industry partner: Wienerberger) and starch (industry partner: Agrana).

During the debate, the audience raised important points regarding the technical aspects related to the replicability of the projects and possible barriers related to their replicability and the use of refrigerants.

Refrigerants were a hot topic during the discussion, especially the use of natural refrigerants. All the companies involved stressed how nowadays the market is embracing the natural refrigeration and they underlined how moving towards natural refrigerants is the right direction for the industry.
