From Q3 2019 the DryFiciency consortium will be sporting a new member in its midst: The Norwegian waste and waste water management pioneer Scanship will be responsible to conduct dryer test runs of the MVR system in a land-based waste management system in Drammen (Norway) for bio-sludge drying.
Scanship – New Norwegian DryFiciency partner
Scanship is a pioneer and innovation hub in waste and waste water management from Norway. Scanship is a cruise industry leader in advanced wastewater purification producing waste management systems for ferries, cruise ships, disaster relief and merchant shipping, as well as land-based waste management systems.

Scanship’s CEO Henrik Badin is delighted to be joining the DryF project: “We aim to increase the capacity of the dryers significantly in order to match the market demand and expected growth for sludge drying, especially for land-based systems.” Michael Bantle (SINTEF) also welcomes the new partner: “We are very happy to have established a cooperation with an energetic and ambitious partner such as Scanship.”

Responsibilities of partner Scanship
For the DryFiciency project, Scanship will develop an innovative dryer that can work with both the SHS (Self-Propagating High-Temperature Synthesis) as well as with the MVR technology (Mechanical Vapour Recompression Technology) system developed within DryFiciency. In a land-based waste management system in Norway Scanship will demonstrate the efficiency of the systems for bio-sludge drying. “The exciting thing is that we will be able to take a waste problem and convert that into a valuable product, and that using the most efficient and effective way possible.” Scanship CEO, Henrik Badin states.
Depending on the electricity mix of the production site, this system can reduce the SEC (Specific Energy Consumption) significantly thus making the process carbon-neutral. In order to match the market demand and expected growth for sludge drying, especially for land-based systems, Scanship further aims to increase the capacity of the dryers significantly.
